Curated by Bea Fremderman.
Featuring Sterling Crispin, Rachael Milton, Dmitri Obergfell, Mike Ruiz, Jordan Tate and Guy Michael Davis.
“WHEN APPROACHING AN ART OBJECT WE BRING WITH US NOTIONS OF MATERIALISM, SCIENCE AND LOGIC. SIMULTANEOUSLY IN THAT MOMENT WE ARE PROVIDED WITH A RELEASE INTO BELIEF, ILLUSION, OR FICTION. STERLING CRISPIN’S WAVE IS A DEPICTION OF AN INFINITE EXPANSE EMPTY OF INDEPENDENT ENTITIES AND FORCES WITH ALL THINGS COEXISTING IN ONE FLUID FIELD. HERE BY DMITRI OBERGFELL OFFERS THE VIEWER A CHANCE TO CONSIDER HIS OR HER OWN INNATE ENERGY. THE SCULPTURAL GESTURE AND TITLE SUGGEST AN OFFERING WHILE THE CERAMIC HANDS ARE USED AS A SYMBOL OF COMMON EXPERIENCE. EXTENDED STARS BY MIKE RUIZ EXPLORES THE POSSIBILITIES OF RE-IMAGINING PREEXISTING IMAGE INFORMATION THROUGH AN EXTENDED PHOTOGALATIC SCENE AS INTERPRETED BY PHOTO EDITING SOFTWARE. IN UNOBTAINIUM, RACHAEL MILTON HOMOGENIZES THE SEPARATE VISUAL AND TEXTUAL LANGUAGES OF TRADITIONAL GARDEN AND TECHNOLOGY DISPLAY THROUGH VARIOUS ASPECTS OF POPULAR SCI-FI MOTIFS. NEW WORK #113 BY JORDAN TATE AND GUY MICHAEL DAVIS SITUATES ITSELF FIRMLY BETWEEN THE IDEAS OF PRODUCTION AND RE-PRODUCTION OF THE DIGITAL OBJECT AND SPANS DIALOGUES OF DIGITAL SCULPTURE, HISTORICAL APPROPRIATION, THE CANONIZATION OF ART OBJECTS, AND THE NOTION OF THE PRINT. IT IS WITHIN THIS COLLECTION OF VISUAL INFORMATION WE SUCCUMB TO THE PHANTASMAGORIC, AND ARRIVE TO THE MULTIPLE DEFINITIONS OF YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE.” – Kunsthalle New
