Tara Donovan

Tara Donovan creates her massive sculptures through mass repetition to recontextualize the form and function of the materials. I saw her show at the CAC this week while I was in the US. I had seen her works frequently as images, but it is a pretty amazing experience to be confronted with 2 million drinking straws all placed by hand. One observation about many of these works: her use of reflected light is spectacular. Donovan brings out amazing optical qualities of her materials that one would never think possible, Haze is an organic and dynamic piece that dramatically changes as you walk from one side to the other, as an amorphous form follows you along the wall of drinking straws.
